Government at Work - Windmills in Reno, Nevada
Another government bogus success at the expense of taxpayers...
Brian Duggan recently wrote about it on the Reno Fazette-Journal website:
"The city’s seven windmills have so far saved Reno $2,785 in energy costs after generating 25,319 kilowatt-hours of electricity. The windmills were installed between April and October 2010 and cost about $1 million out of a $2.1 million federal energy grant given to the city that was part of the stimulus package approved by Congress in February 2009."

Richard Hartley-Parkinson POST-LINK TEXT:
"A burglar who was caught on camera breaking into a house after being spotted by an eagle-eyed youngster has been jailed for five years.
Prolific thief Darren Butt was spied on his crime spree in broad daylight by the young neighbour - whose father, Christopher Horn, immediately grabbed his camera and started taking snaps.
When the pair passed the photos to police, officers immediately recognised Butt and promptly arrested him.
Prosecutor John Penny told Bristol Crown Court this week that Butt struck at the home in the city after being released on bail for another burglary, and helped himself to £15, a laptop and DVDs."

"...The Democrat Who Took on the Unions" - WSJ.com
So, it CAN be done.
Common sense reform that serves everyone well over the LONG term.
This is quite interesting, and very well written...
Common sense reform that serves everyone well over the LONG term.
This is quite interesting, and very well written...
In the Wall Street Journal, Allysia Finley writes about Rhode Island's Gina Raimondo and what she has accomplished:
"The former venture capitalist is a Democrat, which means that she believes in government as a force for good. But 'a government that doesn't work is in no one's interest,' she says. 'Budgets that don't balance, public programs that aren't funded, pension funds that are running out of money, schools that aren't funded—How does that help anyone? I don't really care if you're a Republican or Democrat or you want to fight about the size of government. How about a government that just works? Put your tax dollar in and get a return out the other end.'
Yes, that would be nice. Unfortunately, public pensions all over the country are gobbling up more and more taxpayer money and producing nothing in return but huge deficits. It's not even certain whether employees in their 20s and 30s will retire with a pension, since many state and municipal pension systems are projected to run dry in the next two to three decades.
That included Rhode Island's system until last year, when Ms. Raimondo drove perhaps the boldest pension reform of the last decade through the state's Democratic-controlled General Assembly"
"Panetta Nominates Notorious Navy Captain For Admiral"
Wow! This looks like the Peter Principal on steroids...
The Aero-News.net website posts about that seemingly innocuous headline:
"The 1988 investigative report was scathing. The Associated Press got a copy through the Freedom of Information Act. It reads, in part, 'The destruction of USAF RF-4C was not the result of an accident, but the consequence of a deliberate act. His subsequent reaction demonstrated an absolute disregard of the known facts and circumstances.
'He failed to utilize the decision-making process taught in replacement training and reacted in a purely mechanical manner. The performance of Lieutenant Timothy W. Dorsey raises substantial doubt as to his capacity for good, sound judgment.'
Vice Admiral Kendall Moranville, who had headed the 6th Fleet, added, 'We necessarily rely on the self-discipline and judgment of pilots to prevent such incidents...Nothing, in my opinion, can mitigate Lieutenant Dorsey’s basic error in judgment.'"

The Media - "CNNMoney Changing its Report on Dismal ‘Green’ Jobs Numbers"
The media continues with their conspicuously obvious agenda to make a certain person look good.
Unfortunately, they are very good at it, and except for a few, it goes mostly unnoticed...
Unfortunately, they are very good at it, and except for a few, it goes mostly unnoticed...
Becket Adfams has the story and screenshots on theBlaze.com website:
"'As Kermit knows, it’s not easy being green,' the story began. 'There were only 3.1 million green jobs in the U.S. in 2010.'
Translation: After receiving billions in federal subsidies ($100 billion from the stimulus program alone), 'green' jobs account for only 2.4 percent of the nation’s employment. Seeing as how taxpayer dollars are being thrown at 'green' energy projects under the guise of 'stimulating the economy' and 'creating jobs,' the '2.4 percent' figure is probably not the greatest. At least, that’s what the CNNMoney report seemed to indicate.
That is, until the story changed."

"The Georgia Superior Court Clerk’s office did everything in its power to thwart the very filing of a legal appeal in Weldon v Obama, the case in which Judge Michael Malihi ruled that Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and therefore eligible for the Georgia ballot.>>>
And the Superior Court itself has just dismissed plaintiff David Weldon’s appeal of that ruling.
The numerous questions surrounding Malihi’s February 3rd decision and the clear errors of law and procedure upon which it was based have been discussed by countless members of the new media. "
Penbrook One posts at theDailyPen blog:
"Vital Records indicate Obama not born in Hawaii hospital">>>
And also at theDailyPen blog, Dan Crosby adds:
"A government document found buried in the online reference section of a Boston Public Library archive bolsters a growing mountain of evidentiary data against Barack Obama’s constitutional eligibility to be president.">>>
Then, there's Dianna Cotter on the English version of Pravda's website:
"A singularly remarkable event has taken place in the United States of America. This event occurred in Arizona on March 1st and was an earth shattering revelation.>>>
A long awaited press conference was given by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a five time elected Sheriff, which should have made national and international headlines. Arpaio's credentials include serving in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953, service as a federal narcotics agent serving in countries all over the world with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and served as the head of the Arizona DEA. Without doubt, this is a serious Law Enforcement Officer, not one to be taken in by tin-foil-hat wearing loons.
Yet, in the five days since his revelations there has been little in the way of serious reporting on the findings he presented in his presser. With 6 short videos, the Sheriff and his team presented a devastating case, one the tame US press is apparently unable to report."
And now, the Associated Press' Jacques Billeaud on Yahoo's website:
"A legislative committee on Wednesday endorsed a proposal that requires presidential candidates to swear that they meet the qualifications to be the nation's chief executive.>>>
And the Arizona secretary of state is expected in the coming days to call for candidates to complete a new form asking eligibility questions, including whether they are natural-born U.S. citizens."
And there's Jeffrey T. Kuhner at WashingtonTimes.com writing:
"Is President Obama’s birth certificate a forgery? Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz., believes it is. He recently held a press conference in Phoenix to discuss the findings of a new 10-page report. Mr. Arpaio’s investigators have come to a stunning conclusion: The long-form birth certificate Mr. Obama released last year is a 'computer-generated forgery.'>>>
With the exception of The Washington Times, however, no major U.S. media outlet reported this bombshell story. The liberal press corps is desperately trying to suppress any discussion of Forgerygate — potentially one of the biggest scandals in American history. The media class is betraying its fundamental mission to pursue the truth."
The lawyer, Dr. Orly Taitz, who has brought this issue to court in many venues, gives a synopsis here, beginning with:
"But what about the United States of America? The irony is that we, all 311 million Americans are victims of the biggest fraud in the history of this nation. Specifically, this is the fraud committed by one, Barack Hussein Obama. Unfortunately, the level of corruption among our governmental bureaucrats and judges and heavily censored and manipulated puppet US 'main stream' (or truly backwater) media is enormous. Even with the undeniable evidence of fraud committed by Obama, we are yet to get a court ruling removing him from the ballot and prosecuting him to the full extent of the law for elections fraud, use of a computer generated forgery, claiming it to be a true and correct copy of his valid birth certificate, use of a stolen Social Security number and hiding his identity under the last name Soetoro and Soebarkah.>>>
Well, I better start from the beginning. As Obama started running for the US Presidency, I could tell that much of what he was saying did not ring true and did not check out.
Probably the most troubling was the fact that he is using a Social Security number assigned to another individual."
And finally, this might just curl your hair...

Government at Work - Creating jobs
Sadly, there seem to be an almost endless stream of stories like this...
Darren A. Nichols recently had this story at DetroitNews.com:
"Detroit — Part of an $11 million grant intended to provide business attire to 400 low-income job-seekers instead helped only two people, an audit of the city's Department of Human Services has found.
The audit, conducted by the city's auditor general for the period from July 2009 to September 2011, found the department failed to control the operations and finances of a boutique that was to provide the clothes."
"The Girl Scouts: Planned Parenthood's 'Tactical Arm'"
The Girl Scouts have changed; and NOT for the better...
Catherine Glenn Foster writes about it at AmericanThinker.com:
"Indiana State Representative Rob Morris (R-Ft. Wayne) sounded a clarion call on these matters last month, when he noticed that out of fifty role models the Girl Scouts currently provide for their members, '[o]nly three have a briefly mentioned religious background -- all the rest are feminists, lesbians, or communists.'
Morris went so far as to refer to the Girl Scouts as the 'tactical arm' of Planned Parenthood.
And although the Girl Scouts bemoaned Morris's reference, it was made at about the same time that Pelosi was boasting of the 'valuable' and strong relationship between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood. Moreover, it came on the heels of a teenage Girl Scout employee being order to turn her 'T-shirt inside out or leave' when she wore a 'Pray to End Abortion' shirt to work during off-duty hours.
Some former Girl Scouts have parted ways with the organization because of brochures like one labeled, 'How to Know You Are Ready for Sex.' It's a Planned Parenthood brochure with the Girl Scout logo on the back. Others are appalled that Girl Scouts of the USA is a member organization of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), which publicly advocates for abortion, contraceptives, sexual diversity, and 'comprehensive' sexual education."

At CatholicNewsAgency.com, Jenn Giroux includes this and a lot more in her posting:
"In October 2010 the NY Times carried an article about Hormone Replacement Therapy drugs. It quoted the America Medical Association (AMA) as warning women that these post-menopausal drugs which were originally marketed as keeping a women 'young and sexy' were discovered instead to be more likely to cause advanced and deadly breast cancer.(9) It stopped short of making one other startling revelation: The only difference between hormone replacement therapy drugs which cause deadly breast cancer and the hormonal birth control drugs (now mandated by the Obama administration) is that the birth control drugs are six times the dosage---and are the very same drug!"

At the-American-Interest.com blog, Walter Russell Mead writes about it:
"When American cities embraced the high cost, high regulation statist model two generations or so ago, they were often the richest and most dynamic places in the country. Increasingly “progressive” policies, with higher wages for unionized teachers, bigger bureaucracies enforcing tighter regulations, more “planning” by qualified technocrats and more government services and benefits to improve the quality of residents’ lives were supposed to take the American city into a new golden age.
It’s hard to think of many social experiments that have more disastrously failed. Now many of these once flourishing cities are hollowed out shells, while around them suburbs and increasingly exurbs flourish away from the deadening influence of urbanist politics."
Politicians - Illinois State Representative Derrick Smith
Here's another elected official going down...
Chuck Goudie and Barb Markoff report at Chicago's local ABC website:
"State Rep. Derrick Smith is just in his first year of office, but federal authorities on Tuesday afternoon said the Chicago democrat had already learned Illinois' notorious pay-to-play.
Smith was arrested Tuesday on a federal bribery charge after allegedly accepting a $7,000 cash bribe in exchange for an official letter of support for a daycare center that he believed was seeking a state grant. 'I don't want no trace of it,' Smith allegedly said of the bribe money he demanded in cash. He is a college graduate with a master's degree from DePaul University."

Government action is no substitute for the free market...
In the U.K. Daily Mail, Julian Gavaghan recently reported on the new plan:
"Tens of thousands of people could be helped to buy newly-built homes worth up to £500,000 after the Government said it would use £1billion of taxpayers’ money to ensure they get mortgages with just a 5 per cent deposit.
Prime Minister David Cameron today launched a scheme that is designed to guarantee risky mortgages for all home buyers in a bid to kickstart the flagging property market.
The move heralds the return of 5 per cent deposits rather than the 20 per cent typically demanded by lenders since the credit crunch. It could save buyers £34,000 on the average house.
Under the NewBuy scheme, which is open to aspiring as well as actual home owners, the Government will stump up 5.5 per cent of the value of a mortgage on a home worth up to £500,000."

Using optical camouflage technology boffins at Mercedes Benz created the illusion that their new zero emissions F-Cell car is not even there at all.
Taking the principal that to see through something you need to see what's behind it, they covered the driver's side of the car in mats of LEDs, and mounted a digital SLR camera on the opposite side of the vehicle."

James Chapman has the story in the U.K. Daily Mail:
"Every taxpayer is to get a personal annual statement revealing how each pound taken from them by the Revenue is spent.
George Osborne will announce the radical move in tomorrow’s Budget, saying every worker has the right to know how their taxes are spent once the money enters the public purse.
In some cases, the results are likely to prove startling.
A higher-rate taxpayer earning £50,000 this year would be told they paid £14,183 in tax and National Insurance – of which around a third, £4,727.67, is spent on welfare."

And there are places where being cut off from the world around you is the worst possible thing to do. Pedestrian crossings are at the top of the list. But more than half the accidents uncovered in the last six years involved trains. Headphones are indeed more powerful than a locomotive."

Entrenched school officials seem inclined to fight (and cheat) rather than fix...
This Wall Street Journal article explains:
"In January, a group of parents in the Mojave Desert town of Adelanto filed petitions to "trigger" changes at their children's failing elementary school. That's their right under a 2010 California law, provided the school's academic conditions are dire enough and a majority of parents support pulling the trigger. Few dispute that Desert Trails Elementary fails its students, yet last week the Adelanto school district ruled that the trigger drive lacks majority support because 97 parents rescinded their original petitions.
But based on interviews we've conducted and sworn affidavits we've reviewed, it's clear that many parents were harassed into rescinding."

Coffee Is an Essential Benefit Too - WSJ.com
This "letter to the president" opinion column presents government mandated anything as incorrect, which it should be...
Allysia Finley expresses some of her (tongue-in-cheek) thoughts in the Wall Street Journal:

Government at Work - in Washington, D.C.
More of the same about governments managing our money...
Jeffrey Anderson recently reported this at WashingtonTimes.com:

Bill Connor writes about it with some personal insight at DailyCaller.com:
"I expect many to claim 'sexism' and read this as some kind of 'slight' against the service of women. I intend nothing of the sort. Women have served bravely in those branches and positions open to them. Clearly, women have proven the equal worth of men in many areas. However, as biology and common sense make clear, men and women are distict. This is particularly the case when it comes to the physical nature of brutal Infantry ground combat. A problem comes with the Media’s portrayal of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Seldom does the average American learn about the nuances of the branches within the different Armed services and distinctions I have mentioned."

There are also those that belive in the tooth fairy...
Elisabeth Meinecke posts from Townhall Magazine's EXCLUSIVE March feature, 'Voter ID Laws: Racist or Reasonable?,' by Brandon Darby:
"The group began doing research into the abnormalities in Jackson Lee’s district. They took the first 3,800 registrations of the flagged 19,596 homes with six or more registrants and began to investigate further. The group visited addresses and scoured property tax records. The group found many of the addresses were vacant lots or business addresses. Thirty-nine were registered at businesses and 97 of the addresses were nonexistent. One hundred six of the registrations revealed the same registrant registered more than once, and 207 of the addresses turned out to be vacant lots. Meanwhile, 595 registrations had registrants with driver’s license addresses not matching the registration, and many were voting in a district they did not live in. Of the random 3,800 registrations from Jackson Lee’s predominantly Democratic district, 25 percent had critical errors which Engelbrecht believes could result in an erosion of election integrity.
The media began to focus on the findings from the Harris County tax assessor’s office and True the Vote. Shortly after the August 24 press conference announcing the results of the office’s investigation, a fire of unknown origins burned down the warehouse containing all of Harris County’s voting equipment. In total, the fire claimed 10,000 voting machines, which was approximately $30,000,000 worth of equipment. ..."

"In reality, it is not against Islamic law to burn Korans, as two of the following three points make clear.
First, and most importantly: authoritative fatwas exist legitimizing the burning of Korans in situations such as prevailed at Parwan. Exhibit number one is this Saudi fatwa, which spells out the conditions for disposing of Korans by either burying them or consigning them to the flames, 'thus imitating Uthmaan,' the third caliph:
If it has torn pages;
If it has pages or suras (chapters) out of order;
If the printed text is somehow amiss with errors or typos;
If any of the pages are missing.
The 'Online Islamic Academy' SunniPath adds: 'One should not write within the Koran nor highlight it.' Taken together, these Sunni sources clearly declare that writing in a Koran is tantamount to 'corrupting' the Islamic holy book and that disposal of the corrupted book by burning is perfectly acceptable."

"Why Britain's fallen out of love with the welfare state"
I suspect a survey of Americans may have similar results...
In the U.K. Daily Mail, Domonic Sandbrook recently wrote about the sentiments behind this:
"According to a YouGov poll for Prospect magazine, a staggering 74 per cent of us think that the Government should slash benefits. Young and old, Labour and Tory, rich and poor: every single social group believes it is time to cut back.
As the pollster Peter Kellner points out, such public unanimity is almost unprecedented. And what’s more, 69 per cent believe our welfare system has ‘created a culture of dependency’, and that ‘people should take more responsibility for their lives and families’."

"EXCLUSIVE: GM Dealers Get Chevy Volt Tax Credit for Sales to Gov't"
Apparently, everyone in the auto industry is eating from the taxpayer feed bucket...
Mark Modica recently posted this at NLPC.org:
"I discovered an interesting fact while reviewing the 2011 IRS form 8936 used for the $7500 EV tax credit. While under most circumstances it is the wealthy purchasers of Chevy Volts and other high priced plug-in vehicles that get the taxpayer-funded handout, it appears that General Motors' dealerships that sell the vehicles to government entities are benefiting by being able to claim the credits. These dealers are able to double-dip into the seemingly endless pool of taxpayer funds designated for cronies of the Obama Administration under the guise of green initiatives. Not only do taxpayers pay for Chevy Volts purchased by various government 'units,' the sellers can claim the credits which were designed to help individuals be able to afford the costly vehicles.QUOTED TEXT"

"After Layoffs, Execs Get Big Raises at Taxpayer-Funded A123"
This idea of getting all the taxpayer money you can, while you can, is getting tiresome.
This case appears very transparent and just plain wrong...
This case appears very transparent and just plain wrong...
Paul Chesser writes about it at NLPC.org:
"Massachusetts-based A123 Systems -- which received $279.1 million in stimulus money from the Department of Energy, and up to $135 million in incentives from the State of Michigan -- boosted the base salaries of two vice presidents and its chief financial officer on February 8.
Chief Financial Officer David Prystash was bumped 27 percent to $380,000; VP of Energy Solutions Robert Johnson’s base salary increased 51 percent from his 2010 level to $400,000; and VP of Automotive Systems Jason Forcier saw his pay rise 32 percent from 2010, to $350,000. The news was first reported by the Boston Web site of Citybizlist.com, which obtained the information from an A123 SEC filing.
A123 had laid off 125 employees in November at its two plants in Livonia and Romulus, Mich."

Apparently, some politicians are trying to work out ways to fix the problem...
Recently, at Forbes.com, Avik Roy wrote about some of what's being considered:
"Many politicians (and many voters) duck the hard choices when it comes to Medicare reform. But what’s remarkable about the past year is that, in some ways, momentum appears to be building for real improvements to the program’s quality and sustainability. Based on a new proposal from Sens. Richard Burr (R., N.C.) and Tom Coburn (R., Okla.), the impossible seems within reach: the triumph of sound policy over interest-group politics."
In Our World - Children and their drawings

Leigh Patrick Sullivan recently posted about this on his blog:
"Your four-year-old daughter drew a picture of you and a gun. When questioned by staff, the little girl explained the picture: '…he uses it to shoot bad guys and monsters.'
You are arrested. Your kids are snatched away and held in the ‘care’ of Child Services. Your wife and kids are interrogated, and not told of why you have been arrested. You are strip searched. Your home is invaded by the police in search of an illegal weapon which they have yet to discover, even though you have already been told you face a weapons charge.
All because a young girl drew a picture of her Daddy protecting her.
Where to begin?"

Government at Work - Measuring Unemployment
Accepting the government's unemployment percentage as a worthwhile measurement serves us poorly.
We should be measuring the NUMBER of people working.
They're the ones that count, as they PAY taxes, rather than TAKE taxpayer's money in the form of entitlements.
Of course, elected officials, and the complicit media like it the way it is...
We should be measuring the NUMBER of people working.
They're the ones that count, as they PAY taxes, rather than TAKE taxpayer's money in the form of entitlements.
Of course, elected officials, and the complicit media like it the way it is...
AT DailyCaller.com, Neil Munro writes about the issue:
"If the BLS rules weren’t in place, the current unemployment rate would be somewhere around 11 percent, analysts say. The unemployment number would be as high as 15 percent if part-time workers seeking full-time employment were recognized in the unemployment rolls."
"Why do millionaires pay a lower tax rate?"
Our tax system is really convoluted, impossible to understand completely, and badly in need of an overhaul.
That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if it's purposefully that way to keep the average person in the fog...
That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if it's purposefully that way to keep the average person in the fog...
The Associated Press' Stephen Ohlemacher includes this in a recent article on the subject:
"McBride says it is unfair to tax income more than once, and capital gains are taxed multiple times. If you got the original investment from wages, that money was taxed. If the stock you own gains value because the company you invested in makes a profit, those profits are taxed through the corporate tax. And if that company issues dividends, those are taxed as well.
Lots of people are double taxed, says Chuck Marr, director of federal tax policy for the liberal Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. 'Check out your last pay stub: There's income tax and payroll tax, so you're double taxed, too,' Marr said.
And, he noted, when you buy something, you probably pay a sales tax."

"New Documents: PETA Killed a Near Record-Breaking 95 Percent of Adoptable Dogs and Cats in its Care During 2011"
Clearly, many organizations/charities with altruistic sounding names are just NOT what they appear to be...
The Center for Consumer Freedom recently posted this and more:
"According to records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 1,911 cats and dogs last year while placing just 24 in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 27,751 pets have died at the hands of PETA workers.
'PETA hasn’t slowed down its slaughterhouse operation, even as the group continues to lecture the American public with its phony ‘animal rights’ message,' said Rick Berman, CCF’s Executive Director. 'It appears PETA is more concerned with funding its media and advertising antics than finding suitable homes for these dogs and cats.'
Despite its $37.4 million budget, PETA employees make little effort to find homes for the thousands of animals they kill every year."
"Lindzen totally pwns the alarmists"

It has reached the point where they are actually considering repealing some laws...
In the U.K. Daily Telegraph, James Delingpole reports on this:
"Professor Richard Lindzen is one of the world's greatest atmospheric physicists: perhaps the greatest. What he doesn't know about the science behind climate change probably isn't worth knowing. But even if you weren't aware of all this, even if you'd come to the talk he gave in the House of Commons this week without prejudice or expectation, I can pretty much guarantee you would have been blown away by his elegant dismissal of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming theory.
Dick Lindzen does not need to raise his voice. He does not use hyperbole. In a tone somewhere between weariness and withering disdain, he lets the facts speak for themselves. And the facts, as he understands them, are devastating.
Here is how he began his speech, which was organised on behalf of the Campaign To Repeal the Climate Change Act:"

In Israel, in addition to charging stations, there is this idea...
At PJmedia.com, Brian London describes it:
"The cars run on an air-cooled 230 kilogram (500 pound) lithium ion battery, an electric motor, and a sophisticated electronic control system. Where Israeli ingenuity comes in: these 'Better Place' cars differ from electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf — a depleted battery can be swapped for a full one in about four minutes. The Renault ZE is also larger than the Nissan or the Chevy, sized more like a Honda Accord — a real, practical family car."

Halftime in Detroit - WSJ.com
Here's an revealing article covering the American auto industry, the government bailout, the whys and wherefores, and what the future may well be...
From a recent Wall Street Journal opinion column:
"These companies are not run by morons. They make small cars profitably overseas and are among the biggest-selling brands in China and Latin America. In the U.S. by contrast, cars are a minority of the top 20 models, while Ford and Chevy pickups are among the top three sellers year after year. But if American consumers don't want to sacrifice horsepower and size for fuel efficiency, Washington won't take no for an answer. The new Obama budget includes a $10,000 tax credit for consumers to buy the green cars that they otherwise wouldn't. Will mandated purchases be next?
The point is that the auto bailout isn't an example of enlightened government revitalizing an industry after a market failure. It is a bailout in the wake of failed government policies and bad management that may keep going and going as Washington does whatever it takes to make sure Detroit keeps doing its political bidding."

Now, we just need political policies that allow us to use it beneficially...
Simone Sebastian has this interesting story at Fuelfix.com:
"The number of rigs in U.S. oil fields has more than quadrupled in the past three years to 1,272, according to the Baker Hughes rig count. Including those in natural gas fields, the United States now has more rigs at work than the entire rest of the world.
'It’s staggering,' said Marshall Adkins, who directs energy research for the financial services firm Raymond James. 'If we continue growing anywhere near that pace and keep squeezing demand out of the system, that puts you in a world where we are not importing oil in 10 years.'
There are doubts that energy independence is that close. But many say the booming shale oil fields in Texas and North Dakota and the growth of deep-water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico will allow the nation to cut its reliance on oil imports significantly over the next couple of decades."

Tens of thousands more were handed fines, community sentences or suspended jail terms. Overall, some two-thirds of the worst serial offenders escaped jail, Ministry of Justice statistics show."

"Sierra snowpack study instantly attacked because it undermines AGW claims"
The war between advocates and sceptics of human caused global warming continues...
At PJmedia.com, "Zombie" posted about some reactions to this:
"From the article:
Snowfall in the Sierra Nevada has remained consistent for 130 years, with no evidence that anything has changed as a result of climate change, according to a study released Tuesday.
The analysis of snowfall data in the Sierra going back to 1878 found no more or less snow overall – a result that, on the surface, appears to contradict aspects of recent climate change models.
John Christy, the Alabama state climatologist who authored the study, said the amount of snow in the mountains has not decreased in the past 50 years, a period when greenhouse gases were supposed to have increased the effects of global warming."
Government at Work - Spending our money

Unfortunately, it wouldn't surprise me...
The Creeping Sharia blog recently had this post:
"Dr. Laurie Roth wrote in the Canadian Free Press in August 2010,
What I have uncovered is unacceptable, obscene and should be fought at all levels by the American people. Our State Department is using undisclosed amounts of US tax dollars to build and renovate Islamic Mosques in 27 different countries. They do this under an ‘outreach’ program with the purpose of fostering ‘good will’ in Muslim countries. The state department will not reveal just how much they spend on overseas, foreign programs but a very reliable source told me most likely it is in the hundreds of billions."

The outrage over mean spirited language toward women gets significantly different responses.
It all seems to depend who WHO says them...
It all seems to depend who WHO says them...
Kirsten Powers writes about it on the DailyBeast website, including this:
"But when it comes to high-profile campaigns to hold these men accountable—such as that waged against Limbaugh—the real fury seems reserved only for conservatives, while the men on the left get a wink and a nod as long as they are carrying water for the liberal cause.
After all, if Limbaugh’s outburst is part of the 'war on women,' then what is the routine misogyny of liberal media men?
It’s time for some equal-opportunity accountability. Without it, the fight against media misogyny will continue to be perceived as a proxy war for the Democratic Party, not a fight for fair treatment of women in the public square."
"Documents show Obama’s FCC used regulatory muscle to destroy LightSquared’s competition"
Government should NOT have the power to "pick" winners and losers.
That's the job of the free market...
That's the job of the free market...
At DailyCaller.com, Matthew Boyle has the timeline and story on how this one worked:
"The Daily Caller has obtained documents, emails and communications showing how President Barack Obama’s Federal Communications Commission demolished wireless broadband company LightSquared’s competition through a pattern of regulatory decisions apparently aimed at establishing an 'open-access' Internet in the United States.
The FCC successfully green-lighted LightSquared’s corporate formation in 2009 by allowing Wall Street hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners to purchase majority ownership in satellite company SkyTerra. A major obstacle that still remained in LightSquared’s way was competitor GlobalStar.
GlobalStar had a similar operation to the one LightSquared was building at the time. A major difference, though, was GlobalStar’s already-orbiting satellites, and the broadband Internet access it was already providing to Americans in rural areas of the country."

Janet Tassel describes the issue in her article at AmericanThinker.com:
"The material had been 'vetted' and was deemed 'appropriate,' she said, "and would stay in the curriculum. After all, she continued, the head of the history department had gotten this material at an outreach workshop of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard!
Thence to the principal, Joel Stembridge, who glared at Pagliuso and asked, "How do you pronounce 'Pagliuso'?" and dismissing him brusquely with a refusal to apologize, added: 'If you're unhappy with this, you should know that next year we're planning to teach material that will be even more inflammatory to your sensibilities.' (Where is Ferris Bueller when you need him?) Since Miss Jessica Engel had devoted one day each to Judaism and Christianity while spending 2 ½ weeks on Islam, Tony wasn't sure how much more inflammatory things could get.

Health News - About CPR
I didn't know this...
Robert H. Shmerling, M.D. recently posted this and more at Intellihealth.com:
"CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a method of trying to restore circulation and breathing for a person who has no pulse or is not breathing. You may have the impression from television shows or movies that CPR is a highly effective emergency treatment for anyone who has collapsed.
It surprises many to learn that the dramatic CPR results they often see are a myth. Unfortunately, CPR is often ineffective, and only in certain circumstances is its success rate anything other than dismal. This is not to say it should be abandoned in dire situations, but in general, the expectations of loved ones or those performing CPR are often higher than the situation warrants."

"Despite its name, O’Connor says the F-BOMB is designed to be a platform for all sorts of applications on its Linux operating system. Outfit it with temperature or humidity sensors, for instance, and it can be used for meteorological research or other innocent data-collecting. But install some Wifi-cracking software or add a $15 GPS module, and it can snoop on data networks or track a target’s location, O’Connor adds. As is often the case with these kinds of hacker projects, he says the devices are only intended for penetration testing–finding security flaws in clients’ networks in order to fix them–and wouldn’t comment on what DARPA might do with the technology."

Why French Parents Are Superior - WSJ.com
Obviously, here in America, we have many examples of children's bad behavior.
It just never occurred to me that it was different in France...
It just never occurred to me that it was different in France...
Pamela Druckerman explains why in the Wall Street Journal:
"Our strategy was to finish the meal quickly. We ordered while being seated, then begged the server to rush out some bread and bring us our appetizers and main courses at the same time. While my husband took a few bites of fish, I made sure that Bean didn't get kicked by a waiter or lost at sea. Then we switched. We left enormous, apologetic tips to compensate for the arc of torn napkins and calamari around our table.
After a few more harrowing restaurant visits, I started noticing that the French families around us didn't look like they were sharing our mealtime agony. Weirdly, they looked like they were on vacation. French toddlers were sitting contentedly in their high chairs, waiting for their food, or eating fish and even vegetables. There was no shrieking or whining. And there was no debris around their tables.
Though by that time I'd lived in France for a few years, I couldn't explain this. And once I started thinking about French parenting, I realized it wasn't just mealtime that was different."
"The Islamist Plan for Victory: 'Gradualism'"
Our impatient, fast paced, sound bite society and way of life aren't at all prepared to deal with this...
At FamilySecurityMatters.org, Ryan Mauro tries to warn us:
"The doctrine of gradualism is successful because we fail to appreciate the ability of the Islamists to be skillful political strategists. Gradualism is an intelligent form of jihad based on pragmatism, patience, long-term planning and self-evaluation. The Islamists evaluate their performance and recalibrate their strategy accordingly. The West misinterprets this as being “moderate,” when in reality, not all Islamists are as reckless as Al-Qaeda.
'Gradualism in applying the Sharia is a wise requirement to follow,' Qaradawi declared, stating that Mohammed followed it."
