"Watch: Employees in Pennsylvania Company Learn of Increased Health Costs Due to Obamacare"
If this is how Obamacare is playing out, we are ALL in big trouble...
On the Weekly Standard websdite, Daniel Halper has the story about this and a disheartening video:
"'Look at the numbers,' says the reporter of two employees. 'Jeff and Dave used to have a $1,250 deductible. Since Obamacare went into effect, it's now jumped 60 percent to $2,000. That's nothing compared to Brian, Kristi, and Judy who have kids. they are going to pay twice that, four grand.' The reporter adds that co-pays are being increased, too."
"'World's most wanted hacker' SLAMS Obamacare site security"
The security aspect of the Obamacare website continues to flounder.
A bigger problem may be in it's access to other systems...
A bigger problem may be in it's access to other systems...
Patrick Howley writes about it on the DailyCaller website:
"“Healthcare.gov retrieves information from numerous third-party databases belonging to the IRS, Social Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, and other State agencies. It would be a hacker’s wet dream to break into healthcare.gov and potentially gain access to the information stored in these databases. A breach may result in massive identity theft never seen before — these databases house information on every U.S. citizen!” Mitnick wrote."

Government at Work - "Medicaid Overpays Millions for Diapers"
There seems to be no limit to stories of this type.
Governments just don't protect our money as well as they should...
Governments just don't protect our money as well as they should...
At FreeBeacon.com, Lachlan Markay tells us about this one:
"A lack of competitive bidding processes among state Medicaid agencies caused the program to overpay for diapers by about $62 million in 2012, according to a report released by federal auditors on Monday.
Only five state Medicaid agencies have implemented competitive bidding programs for “disposable incontinence supplies,” according to the inspector general for the department of Health and Human Services.
Those states reported saving up to of 50 percent on those supplies, the IG report found."
Mark Warshawsky: Millionaires on Medicaid - WSJ.com
One wouldn't think that this was possible.
That being said, we all know that government programs are full of loopholes; and, many work hard to exploit them...
That being said, we all know that government programs are full of loopholes; and, many work hard to exploit them...
Here is just part of an article by Mark Warshawsky that appeared in the Wall Street Journal:
"In many states, an elderly person may own a home valued at $802,000, plus home furnishings, jewelry and an automobile of uncapped value while receiving long-term Medicaid support. In addition, they are allowed to have various life-insurance policies, retirement accounts with unlimited assets, $115,920 in assets for a spouse, income from Social Security, and a defined-benefit pension plan. By most standards, such a household would be considered wealthy.
Despite these generous rules, some individuals even game the system further by arranging complex asset transfers or insurance transactions that sidestep congressional efforts to curb fraud."

"8 Things Obama Won't Say But Might Want To" - ABC News
Some fun. Heh?...
On the ABCnews.com website, Devin Dwyer posted:
"As we wait to see how it shakes out, here's our look at eight things Obama likely won't say, and what they could tell us about his presidency in 2014:"
Your charitable donations may not go where you intend
"For Profit" organizations often provide "perks" and benefits in addition to salaries.
"Charities" (by definition) convey a behavior different than shown here...
The U.K. Daily Mail article reports on this one:
"Donations to Princess Diana landmine charity used to pay for the private education of chief executive's children Guy Willoughby's four children privately educated thanks to charity Mr Willoughby founded mine clearance charity - patron is Prince Harry He said it is in line with the fact he works 70 per cent of time abroad"

National (US) Poll - Survey Says...
This is from Quinnipiac University latest polling:
"QThe economy is 'not so good' or 'poor,' a total of 77 percent of voters say. Only 28 percent say the economy is getting better, while 26 percent say it is getting worse and 44 percent say it's the same. The Obama administration is not competent running the government, voters say 53 - 42 percent."
Crime Study Debunks Mass Shooting Myths - Leah Barkoukis
Even more sadly, it seems that we can't really do much about them...
On the Townhall.com website, Leah Barkoukis has the details on mass shooting myths:
"Are mass shootings really on the rise in America? Will an increased focus on mental health help prevent mass murders? Would expanded background checks really make a difference? The answer to all of these questions, according to author and Northeastern University criminology professor James Alan Fox, is no. In the study, 'Mass Shootings in America: Moving Beyond Newtown,' Fox and coauthor Monica DeLateur, analyzed research and important statistics to debunk many common myths surrounding mass shootings"

"Swimming Pools Six Times as Deadly for Kids as Guns"
And the media is silent...
Dean Weingarten opines on this subject on the GunWatch blog:
"When children die in a gun accident, it becomes national news. Partly this is because it is so rare; partly it is because it fits the media template to portray guns as a threat to children.
I have never seen a comparison in the old media of how many children die from swimming pool accidents compared to how man die from gun accidents. (Perhaps this is because many reporters have swimming pools, but that is pure speculation.)
One thing is crystal clear from the above data; in terms of accidental deaths, having a swimming pool is many times more hazardous to children than having a gun."
Obamacare overreach tramples Little Sisters: Our view
Obamacare continues to be criticized by many...
The Editorial Board, USA TODAY recently published these thoughts and more:
"The accommodation is more of a fig leaf than a fix: Although religiously affiliated non-profits do not have to supply birth control coverage themselves, they must sign a certification that allows their insurance companies to provide it instead. Some non-profits have acquiesced, but not the Little Sisters and others who argue that this makes them complicit in an act that violates a tenet of their faith. If the non-profits refuse to sign, they face ruinous fines — $4.5 million a year for just two of the Little Sisters' 30 homes.
So far, the government is on a losing streak. In 19 of 20 cases, including the Little Sisters', judges have granted preliminary relief to the non-profits, allowing them to press their claims. The administration should take the hint."

Saturday Reading - Scientific Research Is Unreliable, Unreliable Scientists Report
A significant amount of our behaviors (what we buy and what we do) have their origins in scientific studies.
Apparently, those studies aren't as valid as we are led to believe.
Why am I not surprised?...
Apparently, those studies aren't as valid as we are led to believe.
Why am I not surprised?...
On the OutsideTheBeltway website, James Joyner writes about it:
"A recent piece in The Economist points to an issue that has been a recurring theme at OTB over the years: there’s reason to be deeply skeptical of most research published in scientific and other scholarly journals. While I’ve long noted the dubious methodology of medical research in particular, and of the vaunted peer review process in general, it’s actually much worse than I’d previously understood."

Companies Selling Stoners With Subtle Advertising | High Times
This article (and website) might be enlightening...

Survey Says - but can we believe it?
This one is reported in the U.K. Daily Mail:
"The German automobile club and Europe’s biggest motoring organisation has found itself in a public relations pile-up after its vaunted Car of the Year Award was exposed as a fraud. ADAC says it is Europe's biggest auto club with more than 18 million members, offering breakdown help, safety tests and many other services to a nation of car enthusiasts. And last week, it angrily denied reports that voting in a poll of readers of its monthly magazine on Germany's Favorite Car was tampered with. But the association has now admitted that its head of communications did indeed inflate the figures by ten times because hardly anyone actually bothered to vote."
Sex Change Ruled "Medically Necessary" | National Review Online
On the National Review website, Wesley J. Smith writes about this:
"A federal appeals court on Friday upheld a judge’s ruling granting a taxpayer-funded sex change operation for a transgender inmate serving a life sentence for a murder conviction, saying receiving medically necessary treatment is a constitutional right that must be protected “even if that treatment strikes some as odd or unorthodox.”"

Ari Fleischer: How to Fight Income Inequality: Get Married - WSJ.com

Unfortunately, the population that needs to know this gets more freebies than incentive, and certainly doesn't read the Wall Street Journal...
Former White House Press secretary Ari Fleischer recently wrote about this in the Wall Street Journal:
""Marriage inequality" should be at the center of any discussion of why some Americans prosper and others don't. According to Census Bureau information analyzed by the Beverly LaHaye Institute, among families headed by two married parents in 2012, just 7.5% lived in poverty. By contrast, when families are headed by a single mother the poverty level jumps to 33.9%. And the number of children raised in female-headed families is growing throughout America. A 2012 study by the Heritage Foundation found that 28.6% of children born to a white mother were out of wedlock. For Hispanics, the figure was 52.5% and for African-Americans 72.3%. In 1964, when the war on poverty began, almost everyone was born in a family with two married parents: only 7% were not."
Politicians - Former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell
Money does flow freely in politics.
Perhaps, as they claim, they are innocent...
Rosalind S. Helderman, Carol D. Leonnig and Sari Horwitz reported this in the Washington Post:
Perhaps, as they claim, they are innocent...
"Former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell and his wife Maureen were charged Tuesday with illegally accepting gifts, luxury vacations and large loans from a wealthy Richmond-area businessman who sought special treatment from state government.
Authorities alleged that McDonnell and his wife received gifts from executive Jonnie R. Williams again and again, lodging near constant requests for money, clothes, trips, golf accessories and private plane rides.
In exchange, authorities alleged that the McDonnells worked in concert to lend the prestige of the governorship to Williams’s struggling company, a small former cigarette manufacturer that now sells dietary supplements."

Safety campaigners blast Britain's first motorway pub | Mail Online
This is serving alcohol at a turnpike rest stop. I wonder what could go wrong?...
Mark Duell has the story in the U.K. Daily Mail:
"Britain's first motorway pub is set to open its doors to drivers tomorrow, serving alcohol from 9am.
The launch by JD Wetherspoon at Beaconsfield services on the M40 in Buckinghamshire has prompted safety campaigners to issue a warning to motorists over the temptation of drink-driving.
The £1.2million Hope And Champion pub - which will create 120 jobs - will be open from 4am to 1am, seven days a week, in the Extra Motorway Service Area at junction 2 of the motorway."
Politicians - Texas State Senator Wendy Davis
Here's another politician who presents a questionable "life story"...
On the LegalInsurrection website, William A. Jacobson writes about about a recent Dallas Morning News article on the subject:
"To summarize the rest of the article, which of course you should read in full, her second husband paid her way through her last two years of college and all of Harvard Law School, he raised their two daughters for whom she didn’t even fight for custody. She left her husband the day after he made her last student loan payment:
When she was accepted to Harvard Law School, Jeff Davis cashed in his 401(k) account and eventually took out a loan to pay for her final year there….
Over time, the Davises’ marriage was strained. In November 2003, Wendy Davis moved out.
Jeff Davis said that was right around the time the final payment on their Harvard Law School loan was due. 'It was ironic,' he said. 'I made the last payment, and it was the next day she left.'
Not exactly the story her campaign previously told, as the Dallas Morning News pointed out:"

"Surprise! Walmart health plan is cheaper, offers more coverage than Obamacare"
Unions and the liberal media relentlessly denigrate all things that WalMart does.
It will be interesting to see if they even cover this...
It will be interesting to see if they even cover this...
Richard Pollock has the details about this on the Washington Examiner website:
"New Obamacare health insurance enrollees may feel a pang of envy when they eye the coverage plans offered by Walmart to its employees.
For many years, the giant discount retailer has been the target of unions and liberal activists who have harshly criticized the company's health care plans, calling them “notorious for failing to provide health benefits” and "substandard.”
But a Washington Examiner comparison of the two health insurance programs found that Walmart's plan is more affordable and provides significantly better access to high-quality medical care than Obamacare."
Fears for the elderly under new NHS drugs policy - Telegraph
Well, it's not exactly "death panels"; however, these ideas ARE out there, and they ARE being discussed...
In the U.K. Telegraph, Sarah Knapton writes about some ideas floating around in the United Kingdom:
"New drugs would only be licensed for the NHS if they help those judged to be a benefit to wider society under proposals from the health watchdog.
Pharmaceutical firms on Thursday night warned that the move could lead to new medicines being denied to the elderly.
A senior professor also said that the plans could threaten the well-being of older people and were 'deeply suspect', while charities questioned the ethics of the policy."

"6 Lies Millennials Must Reject"
Our younger generations are vulnerable to being snookered on a grand scale.
That is partly due to inexperience and the lack of knowledge about history...
That is partly due to inexperience and the lack of knowledge about history...
On the PJmedia.com website, Walter Hudson writes about 6 lies that are out there and toward the end writes this:
"Like each generation before them, millennials will define their own destiny with the ideas they choose to embrace. The whole of human history reads as a tale of tyranny, of political will trumping individual rights. Whether a pharaoh, an emperor, or a democratic majority, the powers that be tend to crush individuals under a banner of grandeur – an appeal to greatness, national pride, or the common good.
The American experiment stands out as a remarkable deviation from that dark standard, an attempt to recognize individual lives as ends in and of themselves, rather than a means toward the ends of others."
"60mph 'green' speed limit on the motorway..."

Government at Work - Benefits in the United Kingdom
In the U.K. Daily Mail, Barbara Davies tells this story:
"What sort of country gives £1.2m benefits to an odious family like this? The drug-dealing dad, his 22 children (including an armed robber and a murderer) and state handouts that prove Britain's lost its marbles.
Given that Raymond Hull is a serial criminal with 32 convictions who has fathered 22 children — aged from 39 to little Barry — with 11 different women over the past four decades, some will find this decision hard to fathom.
For Hull, a former builder’s labourer who hasn’t worked for ten years and has spawned a feckless family dynasty thought to have cost the taxpayer well over £1 million to date, is something of a poster boy for Broken Britain."

BBC News - More men speaking in girls' 'dialect', study shows
Melissa Hogenboom recently reported this on the BBC website:
"More young men in California rise in pitch at the end of their sentences when talking, new research shows. This process is known as 'uptalk' or 'valleygirl speak' and has in the past been associated with young females, typically from California or Australia. But now a team says that this way of speaking is becoming more frequent among men."
"Meet the homemaker who could end Illinois' push to unionize home health care"
They are not as popular these days, and they are losing membership (read due$).
As a result, they are looking for new revenue streams...
On the Washington Times website, Sean Higgins is following this story:
"Pamela Harris is an Illinois homemaker who takes care of her developmentally disabled son, Joshua. She gets financial help from a state program funded through Medicaid. Technically, the subsidy goes to Joshua, who 'employs' his mother as a home health care worker. Because of this arrangement, Illinois has decided that not only is she a state employee, but that it has compelling interest that she join a union.
Harris still doesn’t know why. It is not like she ever plans to go on strike against her son.
"I kept asking, 'What’s the benefit to me?' I could never get an answer," she told me Monday. On Jan. 21, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments by lawyers for her and seven other women, all but one of whom look after family members, into whether Illinois' push to unionize them is constitutional."

Government at Work - "Last year’s 80,000 pages worth of **job-creating rules & regs"
At MichelleMalkin.com, Doug Powers is reposting about this:
"Behold my display of the 2013 Federal Register. It contains over 80,000 pages of new rules, regulations, and notices all written and passed by unelected bureaucrats. The small stack of papers on top of the display are the laws passed by elected members of Congress and signed into law by the president."
"What happens when jobless benefits are cut? North Carolina may offer clues"
Statistics seem to show something different than the "conventional wisdom" that the media reports on the subject of unemployment benefits.
To be honest, I don't think anyone really knows what influences what...
On the MarketWatch.com blog, Jeffry Bartash writes about the issue:
"Last summer, North Carolina slashed the amount of cash it gave to people after they lost their jobs and the state also reduced the number of weeks they could receive benefits. Within several months, the unemployment rate fell a few ticks and by November it fell to a five-year low. Similar though less dramatic declines occurred in Georgia and South Carolina after they made benefits less generous starting in 2012."

"Energy firms cash in on storms by leaving wind turbines idle as some power companies boost takings by a THIRD"
Here's another wind farm story that should give us pause if we're willing to learn from the U.K. experience...
Sam Greenhill and Rebecca Evans and Tim Shipman combined to tell this story in a recent U.K. Daily Mail article:
"Energy firms reaped huge profits from their wind farms during the recent storms while families suffered Christmas blackouts.
Some power companies boosted their takings by nearly a third. The figure for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day alone – at the height of the crisis – was £1.2million.
This is because wind farms are paid to shut down their turbines during gusty weather – and they are paid even more to close them down than they are to run them normally."

$einfeld rakes in $2.7 bil | New York Post
It does get you thinking a bit...
David K. Li wrote about it some time ago in the New York Post:
"Forget law school. Send your kids to comedy camp if you want them to support you in your old age. “Seinfeld” might be the show about nothing, but it’s also made an incredible $2.7 billion — with a 'b' — since it went off the air 12 years ago, according to Time Warner, which owns the series. That makes 'Seinfeld' the most profitable 30 minutes in TV history."
"The Solar Swindle"
It IS useful in specific applications but it's long term prospects are cloudy (pun intended)...
Recently, at AmericanThinker.com, Norman Rogers began with this and followed with much more:
"Solar electricity is growing, promoted, and most importantly, heavily subsidized. The promoters of solar electricity claim that it is close to being competitive with conventional sources of electricity. That is a fantasy. Solar electricity is expensive and impractical. If it weren't for government subsidies, some explicit and some disguised, the solar industry would collapse.
The many claims of competitiveness are always based on ignoring subsidies provided to politically correct renewable power, ignoring the costs associated with unreliability, and ignoring the cost of backup fossil fuel plants."

"I'm Suing Over ObamaCare Exemptions for Congress"
Unfortunately, like the Obamacare Law itself, we'll have to wait and see.
Sadly, I'm so skeptical of elected officials in general that it's difficult to see this other than pre-election grandstanding...
Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson wants us to know:
"On Monday, Jan. 6, I am filing suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin to make Congress live by the letter of the health-care law it imposed on the rest of America. By arranging for me and other members of Congress and their staffs to receive benefits intentionally ruled out by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the administration has exceeded its legal authority."
"The top twelve deficit gimmicks the President & Congress use to defraud the American people"
Every one of these items should be believable to even the most average among us...
On the WatchdogWire.com website, Dr. Richard Swier has the list:
"Joseph J. Dioguardi is a former member of Congress from New York and Certified Public Accountant. Dioguardi in his book 'Unaccountable Congress: It Doesn’t Add Up' lists the top twelve gimmicks Congress uses to hide the true costs of government from the people. These gimmicks have been used for decades by both Republican and Democrat administrations, Congresses under both parties and government agencies.
The idea behind these gimmicks is to '[K]eep Americans in the dark (or – I should say – in the red!), writes, Dioguardi.'"

"The Weekend Interview With Camille Paglia: A Feminist Defense of Masculine Virtues"
This article goes a bit further...
Bari Weiss recently interviewed Camille Paglia for the Wall Street Journal. Here's the beginning:
"'What you're seeing is how a civilization commits suicide,' says Camille Paglia. This self-described 'notorious Amazon feminist' isn't telling anyone to Lean In or asking Why Women Still Can't Have It All. No, her indictment may be as surprising as it is wide-ranging: The military is out of fashion, Americans undervalue manual labor, schools neuter male students, opinion makers deny the biological differences between men and women, and sexiness is dead. And that's just 20 minutes of our three-hour conversation."
"CNN Viewer Has Questions"
In today's society, there is surely room for both the college educated AND those who prefer to pursue a trade...
Mike Rowe of "Dirty Jobs" fame, recently responded to some questions on the subject:
"Your question implies that the middle class should be borrowing money to send their kids to an expensive four-year college. You also imply that college is far too expensive because interest rates on student loans are too high. Might I respectfully challenge both implications?
Since 1985, college tuition has increased at nearly 500 times the rate of inflation. (See: College tuition has jumped by 500% since 1985) Can you imagine the same jump in any other area? Food, housing, medicine, energy? If everything we need to live increased in price at the same rate as college tuition, there would be a national riot in about 10 minutes. So what really happened in the marketplace to allow college to get so expensive? Is it really all because Republicans want to raise the rates on student loans?
Think about it. Universities get to decide how much money to charge their students. Likewise, parents and students decide if they can afford to pay it. It’s a pretty simple proposition. But when the government suddenly makes hundreds of billions of dollars in student loans readily available — under the popular (and voter-friendly) theory that “everyone should go to college” — we see an unintended consequence. We see colleges suddenly motivated to charge more money. A lot more. And so they embark on their own PR campaigns to boost enrollment. They hire ad agencies and publicists and lobbyists and go about the business of persuading people to 'invest in their future.' And most importantly, they provide an admissions department to help arrange for an affordable student loan. This is what’s been happening for the last 40 years."

I'm not sure this police chief wasn't just going along with the sentiment of his previous employers; however, he does now have it right...
At WND.com, Drew Zahn writes about a police chief's change of heart:
"During his 28 years on the police force in Los Angeles, James Craig tended to agree with his state’s tight control over concealed carry permits, believing fewer guns would lead to fewer violent crimes. But when he moved to Portland, Maine, in 2009 to serve as the city’s new police chief, he discovered a different culture – one where guns actually made people safer.
Now Craig, the chief of police in Detroit, Mich., has a message for the law-abiding folks in his crime-ridden city: Arm yourselves, and criminals will think twice about attacking you."

Of course, the unions would present a formidable opposition...
The Daily Caller's Eric Owens writes about West Virginia:
"The school board in the most populous county in West Virginia is once again attempting to institute a dress code for public school teachers. The last time the issue came up — in 2001 — Kanawha County school board members ultimately voted down a policy that would have banned strapless dresses, low-cut blouses, blue jeans and spandex, reports the Spirit of Jefferson and Farmer’s Advocate, a West Va. newspaper.
The details of the proposed Kanawha County Schools dress code remain vague at this point. However, there seems to be a general focus on things like conspicuous tattoos, facial piercings and overly revealing clothes. Spandex may or may not loom large in this round of dress-code controversy."

On the Townhall.com website, Marita Noon writes about "fracking":
"Lies about hydraulic fracturing are rampant. If fossil fuel opponents can spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt about fracking—with the goal of causing a federal fracking ban, they can virtually stop oil-and-gas development in America, as it is estimated that 90 percent of producing wells have been fracked. Without American ingenuity and increasing production, gasoline prices and utility bills will skyrocket. Economic ruin will reign. America will, once again be beholden to increasingly hostile foreign sources."

A Large New Tax on Small Business - WSJ.com
And if that doesn't influence your next vote, I guess nothing will...
I found this in a recent Wall Street Journal article about the many hidden taxes and fees involved with Obamacare:
"Oh, and to salt the wound, this 'fee' is not deductible for corporate income tax purposes. In other words, health plans pay the tax and then federal and state taxes on the taxed amount. Mr. Holtz-Eakin estimates this unusual taxes-on-taxes rule means that the effect on premiums is 54% larger than the dollar amount of the tax itself."
